By increasing blood flow to the area and replenishing these tissues we reduce the sensitivity, tightness and stiffness to the areas thus alleviating the pain. Stretching the area however does not obtain the same benefits as mechanism of action for stretching differs to that of massage.

Our top 5 indicators of when you need a massage:

Relieve Stress

Reduce Muscular aches and pains

Improve Sporting Performance and Flexibility

Increase Blood Flow

Help maintain healthy spinal movement and function

With stretching we the main form of improvement comes from the lengthening of muscle fibres and re-aligning them correctly so the damaged and scarred tissues can undergo through the repair and recovery phase. Yes stretching will somewhat help stimulate and increase blood flow similar to massage but not to the same level or extent. With an adequate stretching regime massages will not be required on such a consistent and regular occurrence.

Our top 5 reasons to maintain a regular stretching regime:

Maintain and Increase Flexibility

Increase your Range of Motion

Increase Blood Flow to Muscles

Help prevent muscular strains, aches and even tears

Help heal damaged and misaligned muscle tissues.

So in summary a massage can help with a number muscular issues and concerns that you may be faced with. Understandably it can also help with emotional stressors and even possibly help manage anxiety and boost immunity. Here at LiveWell Family Chiropractic we have our patients seeking massages for a number of different reasons and if you’re preparing for a gruelling training program then no better way to keep on track for your fitness goals then with a well timed massage. Maintain the improvements made from your massage with a stretching regime targeting the main muscle groups and joints under tension and load!

To make a time with our Massage Therapist please call (03) 9995 8164 or book online at www.livewellfc.com.au.

For a lot of people foam rollers are one of the best ways to help alleviate and facilitate muscle recovery. Typically they are used on larger muscle groups including your gluteals, hamstrings, lower back, mid thoracic region and quadriceps. Similarly to stretching foam rollers are predominantly used to help:

1. Increase blood flow to tissues

2. Help lengthen tight and restricted muscles

3. Can help increase flexibility

4. Improve recovery times

Foam rolling is similar to stretching, it should be used to supplement your training regime no matter how extensive. Foam rolling isn’t just recommended for those whom have a particular exercise or training goal though, for those who spend extended periods of time seated in front of a computer or even driving, foam rolling is perfect and can help to not only help alleviate the pressure on shortened muscles in through the hips, gluteals and lower back. As a cyclist I find foam rolling extremely beneficial through the illotibial band (ITB) and quadriceps.

Yes, foam rolling can be painful at times, but does that mean we shouldn’t do it? Absolutely not. To reduce your chances of injury or re-injury foam rolling should be used to help reduce pain when applied. Depending on the location of application there are many ways in which you can reduce the amount of tension or load going through the foam roller to make it more comfortable.

Lets start with a simple strategy to help you become comfortable on a foam roller:

1. Start Slow. As stated beforehand foam rolling can be painful particularly in the beginning. So start slowly. Spend just a minute or two on each muscle group with longer strokes or movements through the region can help. At this stage it would also be recommended to use the roller directly after exercise, when you are warming down or when blood flow is heightened. Stretching beforehand can also help to reduce the degree of tenderness felt.

Aim to use for approximately 10-15mins to begin with.

2. When/Timing: For the novice foam roller begin rolling at the end of your workout or after stretching. For those whom are more comfortable with pushing a little through the levels of discomfort then foam rolling can be extremely beneficial a day or two post strenuous exercise or training. For those office workers spending 10mins at the end of each day can be extremely beneficial in allowing your body to recuperate and recover.

3. Duration: Don’t think that there is only a certain amount of time to spend on a foam roller. Personally I often keep the roller close to the couch. Not only does it keep me off sitting in front the TV for prolonged periods but it also helps to distract me whilst working through my legs and lower back.

Spikey Ball vs Foam Roller

So the question begs. If I could only have one, which would I pick? Personally both have their own specific uses and depending on the location of regions in which you would use them for would dictate which I would refer too. Spikey balls are more commonly used for smaller areas and more for trigger point release rather than muscle lengthening. Spikey balls are also great to isolate and get into those hard to reach areas such as upper trapezius, deltoid and interscapular regions just to name a few.

So in summary Foam Rolling when utilised effectively can help maintain, sustain and improve muscle repair and dysfunction. When thrown in conjunction with a stretching regime muscular aches and pain can potentially be reduced significantly. Start off my going over larger muscle groups to begin using longer stroke patterns. Aim for 10-15mins directly after exercise to begin with two to three times a week, increasing frequency and duration over time.

We are currently offering a bonus spikey ball valued at $15 with all foam roller sales.

Whilst Stock Lasts.

For any other questions please do not hesitate to call us on (03) 9995 8164 for more tips and advice on how to get the most out of your foam roller.

Spikey Massage Balls are a great tool for helping reduce muscular aches and pains, whilst also helping improve mobility and range of movement. They have become a popular tool and personally I couldn’t live without mine. But just how do Spikey Balls work?

Spikey Balls typically:

Target and alleviate particular trigger points (small specific areas of muscular tissue tension).

Reduce muscle tension; improve blood flow and aid in injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Effects the myo-fascial system (the thin sheath that wraps around and holds muscle, connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels) to reduce any tightness and constriction of the region.

Help to keep muscles relaxed and loosened in between massages.

Used predominantly on neck, shoulder, lower back, gluteals and even feet.

Spikey Balls typically work by you applying your own body weight onto the ball. This should be done either on the ground or standing against a wall (use with caution as the small dimples on the ball may leave impressions on your gyprock walls).

Similarly, to foam rolling start going over the desired region of your body crossing over a wider region. It is also recommended to start off up against the wall to begin with as you can control the amount of body weight and pressure in which you are applying more easily. Quick tip: to increase the amount of pressure when standing move your feet away from the wall slightly and closer to the wall if possible to reduce the amount of pressure.

Caution should be taken if serious bruising, cuts or abrasions and severe pain occurs within the areas in which the ball is being used as this may exacerbate the problem.

Spikey Balls are simply a must have! Why you may ask? One of the great things about spikey balls are they are easily stored and portable. So whether or not you’re travelling with it to work to use during your breaks, travelling away and know of some long hikes, trails or rides you’ll be taking part in or not quiete sure on how your body will cope sleeping on a different mattress they are a great tool to have. They say you should never look into a women’s handbag but quiete often you will see them stowed away within. They are quick and easy to use and more than often can help take the edge off those sore spots which if left untouched manifest into a more severe dysfunction.

Ideally, you would use your spikey ball 2-3 times per week on a regular basis; I haven’t met or found one person that wouldn’t benefit from 5minutes of spikey ball massage.

One of the most common reasons why people present to LiveWell Family Chiropractic is for neck pain. Unsure of why or how your neck is sore all of the time is also common. At times there is not just one quick solution or remedy we can provide but there are plenty of things in which we can control to help alleviate, prevent and keep on top of to make sure our cervical spine or neck maintains its shape and form.

With the current shift in technological advancements and increased time spent with handheld devices (we know 80% of you are more than likely reading this on your phone or tablet) and increased workplace stresses play a major part in why we are constantly experiencing neck pain!

Research suggests that the prevalence of handheld devices such as mobile phones and tablets is bad for our posture. Why? When using these particular devices our heads are lowered, shoulders rounded and flexed. Both these movements go against the normal curvature of the spine and increase the stress on your cervical spine, muscles of the neck and shoulders. Now we could all limit this in a few ways.

Reduce time on handheld devices.

Position handheld devices at eye level when using.

Exercises and stretches after long periods of screen time to make sure you are stimulating the muscles of the back of the neck and shoulder.

Device usage is not the only culprit when it comes to neck pain. Poor posture when walking and sitting for prolonged periods of time will also cause tension and stress in the shoulders and neck muscles. We have seen recently a big shift to having stand up desks within the workplace to improve postural strain on the body.

Other factors such as frequently carrying heavy backpacks. Unfortunately, with the demands of primary and secondary schooling today students are required to carry more and more within their backpacks. It has been shown that children whom carry up to 20% of their bodyweight in their backpacks increase their likelihood of developing neck and lower back pain.

Your sleeping posture has also shown to have detrimental effects on your neck and cervical spine. Whilst mainly applying to those who sleep on their stomach having a bed and/pillow which is not supportive to the curves of your spine and body will also increase the level of tension, stress and strain on the body.

Making sure your neck is moving adequately, aligned and strong reduces the chance of neck-related pain. Some preventative measures include:

Stretches for the Neck – don’t wait for pain to arise before you start implementing a stretching regime. Simple movements such as tucking your chin to your chest, turning your head both left and right and then bending down to touch your collar bones and moving your head up to look at the ceiling without moving your eyes are all healthy stable movements.

Identifying triggers – we mentioned a couple previously. Making sure your workstation is adequately positioned and ergonomically friendly. Packing your backpack efficiently and correcting the arm straps to make sure it is being worn appropriately.

Stretch your back– Neck pain can have a variety of causes and can often be linked to issues in the upper back. When not moving effectively through the upper back the neck can be then asked to move more to compensate these deficiencies. This can cause excessive stress and strain to the neck particularly the muscles of the neck.

Assess your posture – Be sure to fix your posture when you notice your shoulders and head starting to droop. Having someone take a photo of you from side on you can quickly see if your shoulders are rounded or your head is not positioned over the base of your feet.

Book in to see your Chiropractor – This one is particularly important if you are already experiencing neck pain. A Chiropractic adjustment is one of the best ways to alleviate neck pain as it helps to restore adequate movement and function through the joints to reduce the pressure on surrounding tissues and nerves.

Experiencing neck pain and your self-help strategies not giving you satisfaction.

Book in for your next Chiropractic adjustment today!

We are a month away from summer. Where has the year gone. Despite what some mornings have offered over the last fortnight, the weather’s getting warmer, flowers are blooming and we are all starting to become more active! Whether it’s dusting off the old sneakers and re-introducing yourself to the run group you went missing from over winter or simply doing some Spring cleaning. The dreaded weekly housework at this time of year becomes more apparent as we are getting home from work and light is still shining on all those things we thought could wait till later, so when does the big clean begin? Are we fearful of the aches, pains and strains on our spine can easily occur from simply getting started?

It was noted that in 2015, 3.7 million Australians experienced lower back pain, with some of the contributing factors being simple everyday activities.

Vacuuming, mopping, washing windows, reaching for cobwebs and even washing dishes can add extra strain on the spine. How? The forward movement and bad habit of bending at the waist or having poor posture while performing repetitive movements can cause acute bouts of aches and pains in the lower back.

Giving up housework altogether however isn’t always an option. Yes, we can acquire help or hire a cleaner (some of us dream of such an opportunity), but let’s go through

Warmup – This is an easy one but often one we neglect. Now instead of thinking we are simply wasting our time doing a couple of quick stretches and slowly getting into it. Imagine how much slower or time you would waste if you injured yourself or re-aggravated a previous injury. Simple stretches, a gentle walk or beginning with smaller tasks which do not involve overhead reaching will also help.

Share/Reduce the load – Reduce strain on your spine whilst cleaning by making sure that when lifting or moving heavier objects from the ground or simply picking up buckets using all the muscles in your lower limb to pick them up rather than the muscles in your lower back!

Straighten Up – Keeping an upright posture when standing for prolonged periods of time will also help. Whether or not you’re doing the dishes, wiping the cupboards or cleaning the oven make sure you’re engaging your core stabilizing muscles and reducing the load on your spine, particularly your lower back.

Having the Right Tools – they say a good tradesman never blames his tools. Now this may be correct in some respects but when doing your spring clean, reduce the potential stress and strain on your body by ensuring you have the right tools and cleaning products at hand.

Our team at LiveWell Family Chiropractic can help if you are finding it difficult or have existing aches and pains in which you would like to have assessed. With a holistic approach and individualised plans, we are dedicated in helping not only restore your body’s best health but to also give you the confidence to perform tasks without the thought of pain.

Australian chiropractors see up to 300,000 people each week, so chiropractic care may be a great option for you to help keep your spine moving well too.

For more information on maintaining a healthy spine, call us on 9995 8164!

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. Whether or not it is your first pregnancy or you are in your final trimester your body can start to unlike it normally would. A lot of people question “Is it safe to see a Chiropractor whilst pregnant?” The simple answer is YES! With 50-70% of pregnant women experiencing lower hip or back pain at some stage of the pregnancy Chiropractic care can help to reduce this stress and strain.

Understandably with the growing child in vitro, the change in hormones, the additional weight and change in centre of gravity your hips and joints in through the lower back can experience pain or bring about a pain response as this is not a normal degree of stress experienced.

During pregnancy, a woman’s centre of gravity shifts to the front of her pelvis. This typically results in an increase in stress and load on the lower back and pelvis. As the due date approaches and full term is reached the changes in the curvature of a womens lower back can overload vertebral joints, the sacrum and hips. With soft and gentle Chiropractic techniques complemented with some muscle relaxation therapies we here at LiveWell Family Chiropractic strive to help you manage and cope with what aches and pains you experience whilst pregnant. Sciatica is also a condition commonly associated with pregnancy. This pain radiates from the lower back all the way down the legs.

Maintaining pelvic balance is important and it’s going to help you feel and move better. Not only is it important to maintain pelvic balance whilst pregnant but sustaining core stimulation and training will also help after the birth has taken place. When your pelvis is misaligned it can reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby (known as intrauterine constraint) and that can reduce your likelihood of being able to have a natural, non-invasive birth.

Pregnancy can cause the spine to misalign to the degree in which is does not move back into place once the child is born. With this in mind movements and tasks such as carrying a baby, breast-feeding, and even simply bending over to pick things up can be painful and hard to do as your spine is no longer positioned or moving correctly. This isn’t pain that you have to just deal with.

A thorough Chiropractic examination will determine the best treatment to address the reasons why you are experiencing your pain and discomfort, tailored with our rehabilitation programs we will have you not only moving pain free but look to improve on your pre-pregnancy conditioning.

At LiveWell Family Chiropractic we understand each pregnancy is different like each individual is different. We carefully tailor our adjusting and management protocols to cater to your needs.

For more information or to make a time please call (03) 9995 8164 or email us on info@livewellfc.com.au.

Chiropractic Care revolves around the principle that the relationship and level of communication between brain and body is sustained and maintained by your nervous system and thus protected by your spine. The way in which your spine moves impacts not only your structure but also impacts on your overall function and thus your health. By reducing the level of interference or maintaining your best spinal health and movements you give your body the best opportunity to sustain and maintain healthy movement and spinal health.

The spine acts not only to protect your spinal cord and nerve roots but provide support and balance to maintain an erect posture. Without it we would float around with an increased susceptibility to injury and reduced motor control. So what do we mean by motor control. Motor control refers to your ability to perform your desired movement within your environment at any given time. Therefore, at times a minor injury to the spine or damage of muscles surround the spine can have significantly damaging effects to one’s body, balance and their performance.

A study conducted by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) reveals that spinal manipulation or mobilization is an effective treatment for adults with acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain, migraine, and cervicogenic headache and dizziness. Thoracic manipulation also offers healing benefits to people with acute or subacute neck pain, and even shoulder pain. It also proves to be an effective treatment for several extremity joint conditions and dysfunctions such as shoulder dysfunction.

A study published in Spine Journal, evaluated how Chiropractic care effected people experiencing back related pain or sciatica, a condition in which a pinched nerve in the lower spine causes leg pain.

The study involved 192 people. The study care was rated worthwhile by 87 percent of the participants, whom experienced clinically significant changes in movement as a result of their chiropractic Care.

Another study published in the British Medical Journal in 2003 evaluated 183 patients with neck pain who were randomly assigned to receive treatment that involved spinal manipulations, physiotherapy (mainly exercise) and care from a general practitioner, which involved education and prescription drugs. The people in the study kept cost diaries for one year following. The study found that manual therapy was more effective and less costly than both physiotherapy or care by a general practitioner.

Headaches and migraines are one of the main reasons if not the main reason why people typically present to the practice, seeking Chiropractic Care. Patients can often describe their headaches as a constant dull ache or throb which seems to start at the back of the head. To begin with we can often assume that it’s a one-off occurrence and that over the course of the day it will subside.

Does this sound like something you experience from time to time? We all love a quick and efficient solution so typically we rely on some Panadol or Nurofen to help ease the pain and let us get back to our day but there typically comes a time when this is no longer an effective way of coping.

Almost everyone will experience a headache at some point in their life but they are not all the same nor do they have the same effects or triggers. So what types of headaches are there and which do you suffer from/experience?

The 3 most common are

Migraines: sensitivity to light and sound is common during migraine headaches.

Tension Headaches: related to stress, anxiety, dehydration, posture and more lifestyle factors

Cluster headaches: typically classified by pain behind or around the eye.

Diagnosing what kind of headache, you are experiencing or experienced is the first step in identifying the best care plan for you. Often a few simple changes in your daily routine have the potential to reduce or eliminate chronic headaches.

Tension type headaches are the most common seen in the practice, with the shift and increase in time in which we all spend on computers, tablets and mobile phones the time we spend in these repetitive and static postures can be some of the main contributing factors to your headaches.

Taking a pro-active step of improving your posture and ergonomics at work, moderating screen time and reducing some foods such as cured meats, aged cheeses and alcohol which have been linked to headaches can have a positive impact on not only your headache severity but prevalence.

So how can Chiropractic care help with your headaches? Simple.

A lot of tension type headaches and migraines can often originate from the neck referring up to the back of the skull or to the side of neck radiating to the temple. On examination, patients whom present with chronic headaches often have:

Reduced range of movement in their neck (cervical spine)

Reduced movement in thoracic spine.

Compressed or pinched nerves

History of neck pain

Muscle tension in the shoulders
